HOW TO WALK SAFELY
Walking safety
depends on being a responsible pedestrian and staying aware of everything going
on around you.
1. Be
Seen in Daytime: Wear brightly colored clothing in the day.
2. Be
Seen at Night: Wear reflective
clothing and carry a flashlight at night.
3. Walk
on path separated from traffic by a curb or green strip whenever possible.
4. Walk
on the side of the road opposing traffic when there is no separate sidewalk.
This way you will see the cars approaching you.
5. At
intersections, make sure drivers acknowledge you before entering the crosswalk.
Drivers may have a green light to turn left even though you have the walk
light.
6. Walk
with a friend or dog to reduce chance of robbery/attack.
7. Carry
identification and a health information card, and have an ICE
(in case of emergency) app on your mobile phone.
8. If
you carry a personal defense
weapon, take ongoing training and stay within the local laws.
9. Watch
for tripping hazards, traffic and suspicious persons.
10. Don't wear headphones/earphones
that make you less aware of what is going on around you.
11. Carry a mobile phone to use for
emergency contacts and directions.
12. Don't text and walk - distracted
walkers are not aware of tripping hazards and potential human
threats.
13. Vary your route and time of day
that you walk.
14. Note businesses, etc. along your
path where you can seek assistance when needed in the future.
15. Give wide berth to dogs,
whether they are on leash or off.
Alternatives:
1.
If uncomfortable walking outdoors alone, find a walking
group or club to walk with.
2.
Consider walking indoors at
the mall, local track, or treadmilling at home or at the gym.
